Lili Liinev - Towards a better life with yoga

Lili Liinev

Yoga enthusiast and journalism student.

I remember that my first encounters with yoga were actually already in the second/third stage of basic school. A little inspired by my mother, a little influenced as a young girl by the fact that all yoga instructors are mostly very slim, feminine, and good-looking. I hoped to become like that. After the first attempts, I realized that for a teenager it was still a terribly boring workout.

Yet I have always believed in new opportunities, and so years later yoga came back to me. This rediscovery happened for me in 2020. Like many others, the state of emergency had affected me mentally quite devastatingly, and having had COVID had also taken a toll physically. Social anxiety kept me from returning to group workouts, anxiety had generally started to control my life, and physically even climbing one floor by stairs left me breathless. I started looking for solutions, and one of them was an online yoga course found on the internet, which promised to reduce anxiety, stress – in short, it seemed exactly ideal. The goal was to do the given 30-minute yoga routines every day for three months; it seemed crazy, but by that moment I was already so desperate that I was ready to try anything. Miraculously, it didn't even take three months; I noticed changes within the first couple of weeks.

First, the fear of training started to disappear, then self-confidence returned, I began to feel that every time I did yoga, anxiety seemed to vanish – these were small steps, but by practicing continuously, more of these small steps were added every week. After three months, I was enthusiastic about yoga, I signed up for the first group class held on-site, and to this day I practice yoga weekly in various studios or at home, exactly as my mood allows.

At some point, it started feeling very strange to me that I put so much emphasis on improving my mind and body condition, yet before and after training I would eat indiscriminately whatever my current emotion approved. I realized that yoga is, in a way, also a lifestyle and you can't expect good results in yoga if some aspect of your lifestyle doesn't support that development. I've never believed that we should forbid ourselves any food, especially if it gives us positive emotions. However, I have always believed that whenever possible, healthier alternatives should be chosen.

Nick’s products I discovered when I started paying more attention to my food choices. And since I have a sweet tooth, the first step was to replace bars, ice creams, and other sweets. I believe small lifestyle changes can lead to big improvements in how we feel. I experienced this myself both by starting yoga and gradually making adjustments to my diet. If you also want to start your journey, I recommend checking out, for example, Nick’s ‘Coconut’ and ‘Crunchy Caramel’ chocolates or Nick’s chocolate wafer – because these treats, together with yoga, were my first step towards feeling better! ;)
